By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Interesting but useless fact...
Amsterdams awesome cycle culture came about entirely due to the vision and efforts of an Australian women. Mildly ironic.
Seems a bit pathetic that there is a push to get rid of bicycles. I would far rather have a more worldly approach to cycling , and be able to peddle unmolested on errands and then use the Landy as it is intended. Maybe a conspiracy by big pharma to create a new generation of fat kids to sell new miracle weightloss drugs to ?
Meanwhile, in Paris, authorities have recognised that cyclists running red lights is not the big deal that it is made out to be, so they allow it to be done where it can be done safely.
The city that lets cyclists jump red lights - BBC News
I don't have a problem with that as long as the cyclist accepts all responsibility if they judge the situation incorrectly and have third party insurance attached to their bike registration. In case they knock down and injure a pedestrian crossing the road. The latest gift, being introduced over the summer, is a radical step that recognises a regrettable truth: that cyclists in cities often fail to stop at red lights.
What this indicates is that when the signal is red, cyclists can nonetheless - and with all due care and attention - jump the lights. It is important to note that the change only affects right turns or going straight on at a T-junction - in other words where the cyclist can hug the pavement.
At a crossroads, even if there is no traffic, bikes will still have to wait for the green to go straight on.

unquote,
How does one go "straight on" at a T junction ??![]()
Why bother having traffic lights at all. Or road rules for that matter.

Funny that, as when we were in Paris & Amsterdam earlier this year, we were warned by our concierges in each hotel to be careful of the cyclists as they are a very arrogant lot although, I must say, more so in the Netherlands.
Another thing I noticed, which did surprise me a lot, was a distinct lack of " Liquorice Allsorts" in their pseudo peletons on rural & semi rural roads.
