Holy ****, there's both ends of the spectrum on that forum isn't there. On one hand there are cyclists that seem to interact well with traffic and understand why car drivers do some things they do, but geez, there's a couple of extremists there too. The last few posts talking about if it is ok for a driver to pull out over double white lines to safely pass a cyclist (if there is good visibility ahead, etc). Although the law says you can't (except for Tas) most say that it is ok, and would prefer that to causing a potentially more danderous situation - there is a guy there who says

"A cyclist riding a bicycle at 'normal' speeds, is not an obstruction. Normal speed for a bicycle can (eg. on a steep hill) be as low as 6-7kmh, for a child, a less-fit cyclist, a fully-loaded tourist, or an older rider. Drivers just need to suck it up!"

Comments like that are sure to help their cause.... NOT...

Proves there's idiots on both sides of the fence, I think most drivers and most cyclists try to do the right thing, but the extreme dicks on both side will ensure this conversation never stops.

proposal to allow over taking of a cyclist on double lines is going before SA parliament in the next few week.

I left that forum years ago because I got fed up with the holier than thou attitude of those that could do no wrong. I pop in occasionally for a laugh but never login.

On the news this morning here in Geraldton (a wheat farming community and major export port town); A cycling group is demanding the speed limit be reduced on a major road to the port, saying it is unsafe for cyclists when road trains are travelling on the road. This is a busy time of year as all the grain is being transported to the port. What next?

Had similar here in Kalgoorlie a few years back. A new "bypass" road network was built to the south and east of the city, with the specific intent of keeping the larger trucks out of the city (prior to this, road trains used to run either up Burt Street - main street of Boulder, or up Piccadilly Street - right past the front entrance of the hospital).

A small group of dickhead cyclists seemed to believe that these bypass roads should be dedicated to their enjoyment. I have personally seen one cyclist "hitching a ride" by holding onto the ramp chain of a 100 tonne float (it was a large oversize load, so there was virtually NO chance that the truckie could see him or even knew that the tool was there). Eventually, a cyclist was killed on the eastern bypass when the rear trailer of a triple road train ran over him. Again, the truckie didn't even know the cyclist was there.

A group of cyclists screamed blue bloody murder, and demanded that concessions be made to allow them to use these roads - like reduced speed limits / dedicated cycle lane etc. Fortunately, common sense prevailed, and they were told to **** off.
