After reading a few posts it sounds like the Freelander is a good thing, not something I would want but still a good car. I picked up an old issue of 4X4 Australia magazine from July this year that had an article rating all the compact SUV's on sale in Australia. But for some reason? there is no Freelander mentioned. Can anyone shed some light on this? The top ten is as follows.

    #1-Subaru Forester 2.5i-L
    #2-Mitsubishi Outlander LS
    #3-Hyundai ix35 Elite
    #4-Renault Koleos Bose
    #5-Toyota Rav4 GXL
    #6-Honda CR-V VTi-L
    #7-Mazda CX-5 Maxx Sport
    #8-Volkswagen Tiguan 132TSI Pacific
    #9-Nissan X-Trail ST-L
    #10-Ford Kuga Trend EcoBoost

The Mazda is the biggest selling in this segment and is outselling Prado and Grand Cherokee. Without being Land Rover biased I would have thought the Freelander would be a better car than the ones mentioned above.

This not trying to stir the pot its just an answer to the question. Since 2002 FPV have been the only company in Australia building V8 Engines. Holden/HSV have been using crate engines since the 5.7L GenIII was introduced.

Out of that list, I have driven current models of both the X-trail and the Forester. They both drive quite well - the Forester is far better than the X-trail, so that bit is right from my experience, but I would rate the FL2 at least as good as the Forester, but with a better build quality - not that the Subaru is bad in that department either. The FL2 stops better and has a better driving position IMO. Can't really comment on engines as the FL2 was diesel and the Forester a petrol - which went very well by the way, but the diesel in the FL2 was also very nice. It should certainly be in that list - if not top, then close to it.

Edit - driven the Tiguan as well I just realised - that was much better than the X-trail as well...
