All,
I'm in the market for a car for No2 son. On the $ for $ deal we have maybe 8k to spend thanks to his savings
Up here in Brisbane there are a LOT of hail damaged cars for sale in yards at the mo for a saving of 3-5k depending on the model, so a was 15k car can be got for < 10k.
So what are the ramifications of buying one of these cars re insurance? Can you get comprehensive? If so, what happens when he has a bingle and needs panel repairs?
Cheers.

Interesting question, i would have to assume that any insurance cover would take into account the current/previous damage and a possible write down of the value.
They would most likely have roof and bonnet damage so the type of damage a young bloke is most likely to have is front/rear or side.
I think a phone call to your insurer would answer your question.

interesting timing whited3 , as I was just reading AAMI's product disclosure statement.
it states...'we will not fix a fault or defect that existed before loss or damage unless the fault or defect was from repairs we authorised'
and....'we will not pay for repairing pre-existing damage. If we agree, you can pay the extra cost of repairing this damage'.
but like loanrangie says , a call to your insurer will answer your question.
I have 2 friends who bought new hail damaged cars. In both cases they got comprehensive insurance, however coverage against hail damage was excluded.
So - additional hail damage to the affected panel(s) would not be covered, though accident damage to the same panel would be. One of them later had a forklift damage the bonnet (which was where most of the hail damage was).
My understanding is that once they write off the car and pay you out, they will not insure it again.
A friend in Perth had his Terrican written off, bought the wreck and is still driving it, but no insurance.

Thanks for the replies guys. How this came up was with a mildly hail damaged X-Trail for 15k reduced to 9K. The hail damage was hard to see but all over the car.
I didn't proceed with the car for other reasons, mainly that the speedo said 78,000k but the interior screamed 378,000k.
I didn't think you could wind back electronic speedos.
AAMI will not insure a hail damaged car for anything other than 3rd party property. This is a shame as they are the only company I can find that offer anything like reasonable rates for car insurance for P plate drivers.
I have heard rumours that because off all the people wanting to "tune" the GTR's, wrx's , evo's etc a side effect of them cracking the code for the engine was some also found a way to adjust the speedo in certain models.
Can you get the hail damage repaired with the paintless suction guys? Maybe get full insurance with both yours and his name on the policy as it might reduce the premium with some insurers?
