It's a very effective one. There isn't a shipwreck for miles.

Sell up and take some time out, it's good to clear the mind.

By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Definitely. I grew up in North Queensland and i have lived in just about every state in Australia whilst in the Army and I would have to agree. My father moved there and I think it is the only thing he has ever been right about. I like the cooler climate.

You'd get a lot of very deep water!

But seriously, South of Adelaide (Fleurieu Penisnula) is lovely country, around Mt Compass/Myponga. Normanville if you like the beach.

But what work are you going to do down there? Employment in SA is not so flash at the moment.

We live in the Adelaide Hills and love it for its closeness to Adelaide (30Kms), the 4 distinct seasons (always cooler than Adelaide, buy 6 or 8 degrees), and the space. Places here were really cheap 10 years ago, but now they are just reasonable.

Good luck deciding what to do! Tricky decision. Is there a Mrs SlowRide that has any input into what you do?

    Cheers
    David

No Mrs SlowRide, Spudboy. My last relationship came to a halt a few months ago due to my FIFO lifestyle... she didn't like me being away so much, and I wasn't prepared to pull the pin on my job as it's a once in a lifetime opportunity... and I had an inkling the end was nigh.

So i've been looking around and at the top of the list right now is Beaudesert, QLD. An hour from the GC, rolling green fertile countryside, good weather, and large enough in size (6000) that the town should have most services and amenities you'd need. And having lived on the GC for five years during uni i've got mates, wonderful beaches and a decent city only a short drive away.

I could also move around Traralgon as I have plenty of extended family in the surrounding districts. Tassie has also crossed my mind as money seems to go a real long way, and I just love green Australia. But, ultimately, if I can afford to be picky I prefer hotter weather to colder weather... the further south I go the more my joints will be creaking (and aching) in the winter.

So it seems there's plenty of affordable places left in Australia as long as you're not scared of starting afresh in the country. That in itself doesn't bother me, but I am a little concerned it might be difficult to find employment as an outsider... a quick dabble on Seek and I can count the available jobs (in any of the places I mentioned) on one hand.

I had planned on buying a tipper truck and either a bobcat or small excavator to hit the ground running, but my tradie mates on the GC are saying don't bother - there's 10 bobcat operators for every job and same goes for truck owner/drivers. So looks like i'm back to the drawing board... need to get my thinking cap on again.

As some has already mentioned , anywhere south east/west of Perth fills the requirement . Downturns in the industry goes in cycles .

How about the South Coast of Nsw ? Go south past Nowra and look around Sussex or Batemans bay in March-July, around 15 min out of town centre and back from the coastal holiday home strip you will get acreage. Your about 3-4 hours from sydney and a twisty drive from Canberra . If you don't like cold don't look in the southern highlands around Goulburn.
A suggestion for either Gold Coast or other is bus license either full time or as a weekend bonus. One of my mates has worked in the industry for years and they always struggle to find reliable drivers during peak times and on weekends. It's how he became a depot manager. He was a casual, did weekend snowy runs, got permenant in 1-3 night/distance tours , went from there.
