The grand poobar of Australian offshore construction has warned his core crew to expect lean times ahead, with no major projects in the pipeline beyond 2015. In short, baton down the hatches - the golden run of the last five years is done and dusted.

Offshore has been good to me, but nevertheless, unless i'm happy to bear the burden of a six-figure bank loan, or downsize to shoebox in a suburb where the main provider is centrelink, Perth is simply too expensive. And I don't want to get stuck in a FIFO job with a soul-crushing roster merely to service a mortgage. Maybe it's time to pull up stumps and relocate to somewhere where my money will go a helluva lot further. I'm open to options.

Let's say I have a budget of $300K, I like as much land around me as possible (acres, not square metres), i'm a DIYer that likes to pursue a self-sustainable lifestyle, I want to be within 200 - 250kms of a major city airport, and within a 10 - 15 minute drive of a decent sized regional centre. It'd also be nice if I can keep the beach close-ish so I can go wet my lines occasionally, and as a Gen Y'er I most certainly need an internet connection!

Does this place exist in Australia? Is there anywhere you recommend worth scouting out?
