    Edinburgh Military Tattoo

As is my New Years tradition, I am watching the Edinburgh Tattoo.

I enjoy it, but am noticing that in recent years, it is moving away from having much military aspect, if any. Or any that is broadcast anyway.

I am wondering if anyone has been lucky enough to have gone in the last few years who can give a bit of a run down on what actually appears during the show.

We are looking at going in 2018, and while I will enjoy it regardless, I really want to see the military displays that they used to have. I am hoping that what is broadcast is just cut down to suit the available TV time slot.

    just watched it myself

only marched with the massed pipes on a few occasions but there is something about them that stirs me in a myriad of different ways.

brings a tear to my eye these days

    sad case indeed... i know.

We went in '96 to watch it. Watching the last few on telly, I personally think it has been demilitarised to some extent, perhaps to placate certain "precious pups" in the community. More like a pageant now!
It's good on the box but if you get the chance to go, take it. The pipes do it for me too. We had a wedding at our place a few years ago & hired a Piper as a surprise. A few of our neighbours, who range from 500m to a couple of Ks away, commented how beautifully eerie it was to hear the pipes through the valley.

    Thumbs down

I agree with Basil, not as good as it used to be.
I've never been to the Tattoo, but I have been to the Castle & walked on that Parade Ground, which is actually not vey big. It looks a lot larger on the TV than it actually is.

That Tattoo was a repeat. I saw it earlier in the year and I think it has gone downhill. It should be called "The Edinburgh Musical Festival". Granted, there are some good parts in it but I miss the more "military" side of it.

Totally agree they seem to have lost the plot

To many dancers and non military stuff but as

They said at the end of the show the last sixteen

Years has been sold out and it makes a profit

So obviously they are catering for a different audience

Interesting you should say that. I also thought it was a repeat when I watched it last night.

I'm an avid watcher every year. If I'm away from TV access, I make sure to have someone record it for me. Must admit that it has been getting less impressive over recent years though.

For those lovers of the pipes, there is a local busker over here who can usually be seen outside the Fremantle Markets most weekends. Something different, but very entertaining to watch.

He is actually very good on the pipes - has quite a variety of tunes in his repertoire, including military, traditional Scottish and others - but he play them all in his own "style" which may be a bit different to what you might expect.
    Cheers .........
