I know what you mean, i test drove an SS Ute and hit 6th, went to accelerate and there was nothin. Cant disagree on the GT either, would love one of those, they are 6 speed now also. I think the sports shift auto is a bit of a gimick, got a mate with a stadard ute with the same gear box, he said he used it heaps for the first week, now he never uses it. Matt

Yes I do not attempt quick overtaking in top! But who does? Don't you change down or kick down when having to overtake in a hurry?

A quick change to 4th (direct) and she's cooking. Still a peaky engine with crap ratios's. However great fuel econonmy on a trip, its even better than my old ef falcon.

Still has trouble holding top in the wind when towing!

Landy for towing, dunnydoor for blasting!

Do you use 6th when towing, i would have thought it wouldnt hold 6th all that well in any conditions when towing. Matt

Hi Ace,

When towing my 17' Millard Challenger the SS will purr along nicely in 6th unless it is windy. Some days it will happily cruise up small/med hills and long rises with no troubles and other days I just leave it in 5th.

It is all dependent on wind, I was surprised how much difference it makes when towing a van.

I prefer towing with the landy although overtaking is not normally an option unless you have miles of road. With the SS I could cruise up the ranges (Cunninghams gap/Blue Mountains etc) at 70-80 in 4th and enjoy the view!

Gotta love the V8 economy though, double the HP of a LR V8 and much less fuel usage! (Mixed consumption is about 12L/100Kms)

Have to be fair though the Rover V8 has been around for a while, although, so has the chev small block!

I've been averaging 10.6L/100 over the last 75000km. Best was around 9.7 worse around 11.1 so not a lot of variation.

Did 10.7 across the Simpson.
$1002 worth of diesel in 2000 for 7231km V
$848 worth of petrol in 1989 for 6499km

My clapped out 3.5 averages 22-23L/100 kms, but I didn't buy a V8 Rangie for it's fuel economy. Once I do some work on the engine itself It should improve, but I don't care.

When the fuel guage goes towards the 'E' mark it's time to refill 8)
