Bring back some of the good old days

Washing machine started leaking from the cold filler hose. On inspection the washer was leaking. I went to the only hardware for k's ...Bunnings... couldn't buy a new washer. I had to buy a nut and tail kit for $7.00. Darn expensive washer. We used to have a local hardware where you could buy individual items, but it is long gone. If I had an alternative I woud use them. ? suppose Masters is the same...everything pre packaged into "kits. I HATE MODERN HARDWARE SHOPS

silly boy, you were meant to buy a new washing machine, not fix it.

Not just washing machines. At the Landrover Expo last year I was looking for a set of points for the 2a - the very helpful man at the supplier I tried agreed to break up a kit comprising points, condenser and (from memory) rotor button and distributor cap.

As far as washing machines go, I was able to buy a pulley recently for my washing machine - which I bought second hand twenty years ago! Admittedly I had to wait a week for it, and inspect it when it arrived to ensure that it was not really made of gold, as the price would suggest....

Yes I loved the old days of "fix it" rather than ditch it.

Astounds me that these days when people are so on about recycling etc that they dont realise how much better it is just to repair things rather than replace them....

Of course that was when things were manufactured that were WORTH fixing because they LASTED. The last thing manufacturers want these days - they want you to buy a new (insert any given consumer product here) every 5 years
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

There may be a new era approaching (says I hopefully!) with the advent of 3-D printers.
I know the technology is still pretty immature but in theory, one day you'll be able to PRINT many spare parts.

Just load in a rubber cartridge and print a new hose washer!
Maybe even print Land Rover parts in future.

Or have to buy multiple items of the part you want because it comes packaged in a pack of 2 or more.

Recently wanted a bracket to fix some PVC piping to a wall. Only wanted one bracket - had to buy 5.

I met a mate there two days ago who wanted two ramset bolts for a small job. He had to buy a whole box. He wasn't happy either.

I have lost count of the opened half empty packets of bolts, screws, washers etc. that litter my shelves.

Yes the days of being able to buy just what you needed.

I can't imagine the waste this multi buying must generate

don't know where you are shopping but there are a number of hardware/pump/industrial outlets around me who will always sell you single items, including Bunnings.....that includes ramset bolts.

within 10-15mins I can just about find any nut, bolt, washer, screw, o-ring, pump spare, gasket material, sealant , all at good prices, all done with a smile, better than the "good old days".
