    Speed rating of tyres???

    G'day All,
    Just been reading the threads on Tyres and Insurance Companies/Premiums and it would appear that from what I read re: Tyres, is that most people don't seem to take into account that the Tyre Placard (on the drivers door on my '95 Disco) states that tyres fitted must have a speed rating of "S" or higher, so the 205R16 Desert Dueller ATs (that were on my Disco) having an "N" rating were ILLEGAL in the eyes of the Insurance companies. I've heard of claims being rejected on this basis.

    A mate of mine had written to Land Rover back in 2000 to see if they would downgrade the speed rating and the reply was, "that it is a blanket rating to cover all Countries including those with Autobahns where speeds in excess of 200kph are reached so no they can't down grade the rating".

    I had been running Wrangler AT/Rs (245/70x16) on the back of my offroad VW Kombi and had been very impressed with their performance particuarly in sand (past 9 months living at the junction of the Canning Stock Route and the Tanami Rd) and was surprised to see they had a speed rating of "T". So the Discovery is now wearing the same.

    Good Point Ian,

    I was shopping for tyres for my wifes shopping trolley.. erh I mean Astra I found the same thing .... to make insurance happy... need tyres with speed ratings over 200Km!!....

    Like she's going to do that!......... Not even on her broomstick 8O 8O


    But I bet half the 4x4's out there have tyres that don't meet the speed rating specified by the Manufacturer..

    as do my alloys

    there are only 3 kinds of alloy i can run on my 130
    that the insurance companies will cover

    something to do with load rating of the alloys :roll: :roll:

    When changing tyres last month I checked with the NRMA about the tyre plackard and was told that you could drop one speed rating but could not drop the load rating at all but i decided to stick with the XPC's

    Here's one for you then.... The LandRover G4 Challenge had Goodyear Wrangler MTRs on all the vehicles (Disco, RaRo, Freebee & Def). Although they're a brilliant tyre, they only have a "Q" rating :!:

    I've got a set of them for my Freebee but I'll be buggered if I can get it faster than 93MPH anyway!!!

    Speed ratings.

    Hi Mark. If you lived in WA and got caught doing 93mph they'd probably hang, draw and quarter you at dawn!
    It's nearly a capital offence here and they wouldn't be worried about tyre speed ratings either.
    In fact the cops are so thick they probably don't know anything about them.
    Don't know about the insurance companies as my Defender won't go fast enough to get anywhere near those speeds.

    If your pre - about 1984 then all these dont apply as the vehicle doesnt need speed rated tyres.

    I can legally run Q78 (36') tyres on my S3, as they are not speed rated, but are within 25mm of the largest factory fitment of tyres on the vehicle (900x16).

    Anyway, thats my story.

    Those boys would have a fit if they went to Germany then. The Autobahns don't have speed limits so you see plenty of Porkers, BMWs, Mercs, etc... cruising along at 200km/h+. The car manufacturers electronically govern their cars to approx 230km/h but a quick poke in the ECU can usually sort that out. :wink:

    its all to do about the weight a 130 can carry and tow
    or something like that
    but i do now if i was to run the extreme alloys and had a crash i wouldn't be covered
