look in red book for the wholesale price. that is about all you can expect.

I'd try and sell privately first if you can spare the time. Discount under some of the others but note you are competing against dealers as well and they will be aggressive with price.

I think that you will find that if they give a better trade-in price, their car price will be higher. It's about being happy with a drive away price rather than focusing on what the trade-in price is. I was disappointed with my trade-in price as I perceived it's value to be higher than that offered by several dealers but I was very happy with the total price. That said, if you are prepared to sell privately, you will probably come out of the transaction with more money as you would more likely get a better price for your old car by selling privately.
