How much is a car worth at the scrappie?

My daughter has just graduated from her appalling old Hyundai Excel to a shiny new Mazda 3, very nice it is too...her old Hyundai is not worth anything as a vehicle, wreckers offered her $100 for it, a friend has advised her to take it to a scrap metal dealer, told her she should get better money than the wreckers. I have had the scrap bloke come and take wrecks away for free before, but as this has 3 days rego left I'll drive it to them. Can anyone tell me what she should expect to get for it as scrap? Would be handy to go in with some knowledge of what a fair figure is.

Check your local yellow pages under vehicle removals, ring and ask how much. Got rid of a couple of bombs and got $200 -300 for them and they pick up and take away.
Scrap prices have fallen from $295 a ton to a lot less now I believe

$80 a tonne (at the yard) here in Bundy. That makes an Excel worth about $60-70. Wreckers would probably value it at a LITTLE bit more.

Just rang around a few scrap places in Morwell and locally here in Drouin, been offered $100.00 at the gate, might swap the battery for a dead one I have and drive it in.

I do scrap for a living, in NSW you would be lucky to get $100 a tonne, less the $30 env. levy.
Got to the point that we will be charging to take cars to scrap, Regards Frank.

If you got $90.00 from the scrap yard consider yourself lucky. To get the best value at the scrap yards is to dismantle it and take it in pieces. That way you can separate the copper from the aluminium from the steel. If you can get rid of the tyres before hand even better.

Took it in today with a second (cooked) motor in the boot, $100 cash. I'd have loved to be able to wreck it for her and get some more money back, but there are not enough hours in the day as it is.
