Thread: Corby found guilty

I was watching sunrise this morning on channel 7, the host made the comment that he spoke to a lot of journalists that are over there covering the case. When they were questioned about whether they thought she was innocent or guilty, (off the record) every one said guilty. As he said, they've seen all the evidence, they know it inside out. All we've seen is what the Australian press wanted us to see. Who are we to say whether she's innocent or guilty, really, what do we know about the case? We know what the press of this country wants us to know, poor miss Corby, but what really is the truth?
Is it as she (a person facing a possible death sentence) says that she opened her bag willingly and without hesitation, surprised to se 5kg's of pot sitting there? Or as the Indonesian customs guy (a trusted government official) says, she was asked to open the bag and became agitated and nervous, not wanting to open it.
How can we sit there and condemn another countries system without knowing the facts, and as John Howard said himself, how would we feel if some other countries govenment tried to interfere with our system if we were trying a foriegn citizen in our courts?

Picture this - Indonesian guy flies into Australia. Gets caught going through customs with 5kg of pot in his bag and claims the baggage handlers between Bali & Jakarta put it there. Who would believe it?

Just as we have a certain level of mistrust for any foreigner accused of committing a crime in Australia so to do the people of Indonesia. As previously stated it would appear the fact is she was attempting to go through customs with a quantity of illegal drug in her possession. How the drug got there and the logic of importing that particular drug are irrelevant.

The idea that people will ban Bali/Indonesia because of this verdict is just ridiculous. The only people this would hurt are the everyday people already struggling with the down turn in tourism in the region. It’d be like not shopping at your local corner store because you didn’t agree with John Howard’s latest policy. Stupid!

I hope Corby will eventually get off as I have my doubts on her guilt. I also think we don’t have to look overseas for inconsistency in sentencing. Seems every other Sunday paper has an article about some rapist/paedophile type getting released after serving 2 weeks of a 10 year sentence.

I agree with most of what you said, but the difference is a foriegner being found guilty here gets a term in relative easy accomodation with telly etc or maybe deported and a fine, we are not tough enough here on drugs.

Anybody that goes there after letting off the murderers of 200 and the other jailed "innocents" does ask for trouble as a westener, especially in a moslem country, years ago my mother was spat on in Jakata for not having a scarf on! I've a mate who lives there and married an Indonesian and was forced to convert or go home, they care less for us only our aid dollars.

I've also got inlaws that have a resteraunt in Bali and I hope they go broke, should have invested in Oz, poxy Pathfinder owner.

I'm not saying that what they do is right, or that I agree with their ways. All I'm saying is that's the way they are over there, and if we don't like it we shouldn't go there. I know I won't.
As for treating foriegners badly, I'm married to an Italian woman who's parents and herself suffered some pretty poor treatment from Australians when they came here, and for some time after. Yes including being spat on and told "go home wog, you don't belong here"

Our outward appearance as easy going and tolerant is a very thin veneer.
