Do the hiclones actually work? Not a single person on overlander or 4wd monthly has said a good thing about them. Mind you that doesnt mean much. Matt
Hi all
I have had a little work done on the "breathing" system on the 130 (300TDI motor), and it has had good results! (it is now comparable to the TD5)
In short, I have enlarged the size of the air intake from the snorkle to the air box, replaced the tube (with the "factory ding" in it) from the turbo to the intercooler, and had 2 hiclone's fitted in appropriate places.
The end result is that I have truck loads of better bottom end power and removed most of the turbo lag.
It will be a while before I do a decient run so I'll have to wait to see if there is any improvement in hwy economy.
Will try to sort out some pics to show what was done.
This afternoon I'm going to have a play in a little sand also to see how it goes.

Matt. if you are ever coming down to Penrith, give me a ring so I can arrange a test drive for you in a Tdi Disco with LPG injection.
You'll be amazed at how well it pulls from down low.

I'll be there in an hour and a half. Sure thing, will let you know for sure, i would definitely be interested. Dont know if i would do it to my disco, given the cost and it not saving on fuel costs but i would be interested to see how it affects power. MattOriginally posted by p38arover

Now that sounds very interesting.![]()
I've gone one step along the above mods by ripping out the standard ducting between the snorkel and air box, and utilising 80mm duct. I also cut the spigot off the snorkel where it necks down to 60mm OD, 52mm ID so it went back to 76mm OD.
I feel there was absolutely no difference in (perceived) performance. Same thing when I went from paper to K&N air cleaner element and back.
I honestly don't believe that the 'bashed in bit' on the tube between the turbo and intercooler would create any problem at all. In fact, I willing to bet that in both flow bench testing, and dyno testing, there would be no measureable difference. Better (shaped) tanks on the intercooler, however, would make a (probably only slight) difference. They are a pretty crook design.
Which leaves the Hiclones, a product I have roundly critisised in the past. Could they actually do something, other than be a restriction to flow ????? :?
in my opinion the hiclones are a waste of time and $$$...
had one fitted on a previous vehicle and made NO difference at all...
my biggest concern was who was going to pay for the repairs when the thin decided to disintegrate and lodge pieces of metal in the engine 8O

they should be fitted before the air cleaner for this reason......
so then there is even less point to fitting them... the air filter will destroy all the super duper spiral air stuff....
Ill be interested to see what it does to your fuel economy 8)

Hi all
Well I played in the sand yesterday, and the difference was well noticed, didn't manage to "bog down" the engine once.
The guy I had help on this little project has done alot on bush trucks around here and I took his lead on the job. There are 2 hiclones in the system. 1 straight after the "bend" after the turbo, and one straight out of the intercoller. These, along with the new "ding"-less tube, are what I put down to my new bottom end power.
The larger air inlet tubing from the snorkle to the airbox is where I believe the extra economy will come from on hwy runs. Yet to try that, my next trip will not be for a while.
To prove to myself that it was not all percieved improvements, a friend out here has a defender wagon the same age (and motor) as mine and we did a comparison. The difference is massive.
Cheers
