As far as I know, Nissan bought the licsense off BMC for the A series motor.
Cheers, Mick.
I think the reputation of the motor was pretty good. They were used in Triumph sports cars up to the TR4? in the 60s and the Vanguards up until then until they used the Triumph 6.What sort of reputation did the motors and the vehicles they were attached to have?
I even recall that they were used in an Indian version of the Rover SD1 up until the 90s.
Now I am not sure but I looked under the bonnet of a Burmese built Mazda 4wd military vehicle in the late 90s and I think that it was a Vanguard motor in it, with an Updraft carburetor.!!!!
Its amazing where the tooling for some of these old motors turns up. I recall looking at a Nissan "Grinner" motor on a stand in a Mona Vale workshop in the 90s-or 00s and it was a BMC A series of all things. And the first Bluebirds that came to OZ had an A series, and they even bought blocks from BMC in the 60s.

Yes I know, but I read somewhere long ago that they also actually bought thousands of blocks from BMC, as they geared up their own production. As far as I know, Nissan bought the licsense off BMC for the A series motor.
Re The Grinner. I was just commenting on the longevity of the motor as it was a 90s model ute.
I just recalled that I have ridden in a last shape Vanguard with the 4 cylinder motor, and it was a real slogger with a three on the tree. My next door neighbor was a Greek from a small village and he took me for a ride one day when I was about 12 or so , and was discussing "the box of gears " with me as AFAIR the synchros or clutch were not right, as he changed into top at about 20KMh.Chug chug chug.

The Vanguard motor is a wet sleeve too.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
