Why You have A Land Rover, What else have you had?

Well seeing everyone is bearing all - I might as well do the same. In order of purchase.

1971 Morris 1300 auto (had visions of a Mazda R100 - but Dad didn't)

1974 Mitsu Galant (new) - reliable but ordinary

1977 Lancia Beta Coupe (new, wow, my first offroad car - did the Flinders and Wilpenna Pound - only bashed in the sump once - this car also did the Dargo Hill Plains, Dargo to Mt Hotham and back - had to recover my bike stuck in the snow - is really a two seat sports car)

1950 Series 1 Landy - at 24 the offroad bikes were hard on the body - wanted something a bit more comfortable (yeah rite) - could get 70 on the speedo going down hill. A great car - damage was never an issue

1975 Renault 16 TS (in the UK - nice but full of rust)

1971 V12 Jaguar E-Type Covertible (still got it) - (bought in the UK - what can you say - awsome - still sits in the garage - one day it be on the road again)

1985 Suzuki Sierra LWB (new) - traded the Series 1 for it - great vehicle - drowned it soon after I got it south of Moon Pt on Fraser - was at least 6 foot under - drove it back to Sydney 3 days later and sold it 3 years later - no rust

1971 Series 3 - blew the engine and rebuilt it - reminded me of the series 1 - just a bit more comfortable

1980 Subaru 4WD wagon - added highlift kit - great car - great on the sand - only sold it recently after 15 years and an extra 250,000km

1977 Jaguar XJC V12 (still got it) - bought as a wreck (fire) and is still a wreck - will go soon - was going to be a retirement project but not worth it

1994 Series 1 Disco 3.9 (new) - first of the 3.9s - only had it 3 months

1994 Series 1 Disco update 3.9 (new) (still got it)- thought the previous model was a new model - 3.5 to 3.9 engine - saw the update on the road about 2 months before it was released - really got ****ed of with LR - so ordered the update and was able to sell the first one for what I paid.

1998 Freelander XEDI (still got it) - got it late last year -sold the subaru for this. Great car but recently had VC/IRD failure.

Hi Hatchy, i am on my first 4wd and its a Disco, love it to death has been nothing but reliable (touching wood), just the usual things like bearings perished rubber lines etc needed tidying up. I bought a Land Rover because i love them, the best 4wd in the bush in standard form, anyone who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves. A disco or defender in standard form will go more places easier than a cruiser or patrol. Better articulation, smaller so it squeezes into tighter gaps, and the diesel ****s on the lot of them for economy. I would never own another 4wd.

Steer clear of the Surf, they are grey imports from Japan- ie imported after a couple of years with low km's on them. They are different from your average hilux so parts can be very hard to get, and expensive.

Of course the guys on here will tell you to go the land rover, reliabilty isnt an issue, if the vehicle you buy is well serviced and looked after it wont be any less reliable than a cruiser or patrol. All the things you read on other forums are from people who have never owned rovers and heard it from a mate of a mate, sure there are lemons but they happen in any brand, you are just as likely to get a lemon cruiser as you are a lemon disco or defender. Just ignore them and research yourself. Many mechanics will tell you similar thing, take this with a pinch of salt also, many mechanics bag what they dont understand or dont really like. The guys on overlander will bag rovers any chance they get, because its not what they like, simple as that.

Another reason why you should buy a disco or fender- the resale value- because Land Rover products have the reputation they do it means people who know what they are on about get awsome second hand prices and a range of vehicles. With the money you save not buying a similar aged cruiser or patrol you can spend on accessories and build an off road weapon that will leave cruisers and patrols in your wake. Matt

Allways loved Land Rovers something with character but had difficulty with the Series 3 mechanics. Greatly appreciated the Range Rover years ahead of its time but didnt really like the soft aspect of its design.
Maybe the Stage 1 can bridge the gap but only time will tell.

Why I love the Marque ????? Well, growing up in South Africa, Land Rovers are THE ONLY 4x4 up to the task... Cruisers and Patrols just dont cut it back home... I grew up around Landies and my dad always managed to fix his countless cars with a bit of wire and duct tape 8) ...

They have character and charm... Last forever if you look after them, go very well in the bush and are VERY good value for money in Australia seeing that Aussies don't reckon they are much chop [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img] [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img] [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

Mate how can you say you must be an oddity. It's not quantity that counts but quality.

DATSUN 1600 Legend car. Put a CIG locker in the back a sumpguard on the front and a set of 14" rally tyres and it will go anywhere (well almost). I've done my most memorable trips in the old 1600.

Interesting question there, why do you ask? I suspect you're looking for the reason to swallow the big pill and by a proper 4WD, yo?

Irrespective of all the motors we have or have had, an LR is a life experience, look after it and it will look after you.

And having driven almost everything that has been built (part of my job) that's why I have an LR, despite the total lack of factory involvement after sale. LR is a myth constructed and worthy of such. (and a much better mythical construction than a Jeep, Nissan or Toyota).

So, should you ever buy an LR, you are buying a responsibility as opposed to whitegoods on wheels. Actual cred.

Sorry i didnt realise we were doing cars aswell. My first car was a 1600 MkII Escort, 4 door. I wanted a Landy but nothing in my price range was available at the time and i needed cheap transport for uni. Whilst at UNI i looked at a Series II SWB Soft top, the guy selling it reckoned it was an ex army, that was crap cause the blue paint under the **** house tacky green paint job was coming through, it also had a valiant slant 6 in it, and i wasnt aware they used SWB's other than the light weights. Anyway, it was a mess and wasnt reg'd and he wanted $1800 for it, told him to stick it and the most i would go was $500 and that was only cause there werent anymore available in wagga. He never called. I then bought a 93 VP V6 Commodore, sold it last year to help pay for the disco. I also had a 1979 2dr RS2000 which i was going to restore but had to sell due to lack of funds and to many bills. A Landy was what i craved for all along though, so last year i bought one, the disco, and it will only be landies from now on, the next purchase to replace stacey's commodore will be a Turbo Diesel Freelander, when we have the cash.
