74 Rover P6B (British racing green, tan seats - wonderful wonderful car. Beautiful. I wrote it off three weeks after and engine rebuild that made it even better. )
75 HJ ute (good concept though I bought the wrong one)
71 Rover P5B Saloon. (White with red seats - owned it for 12 years. great car but I could not/ would not keep up with cosmetic maintenance, she started looking tatty and I feel out of love about 4yrs before selling it cheap. I think it went to a better home and I hope it did)
Now I drive:
96 300Tdi Defender, roobar, aux fuel tank, dual batteries, UHF and canvas seat covers custom made by a mate. Love love love this car. Have always thought Land Rovers looked great.
Even though I go on a major camping trip up north etc each year (7000km +) and use the vehicle off road often, I don't claim to be one of those people who "use their vehicle off road and own it for the right reasons" because even if I didn't do these things, I would drive a Defender anyway because I just like them. Even for round town, the diesel is strong & economical, you can cart your stuff around, sweep out the beach sand. Being a Land Rover you can pull up at a wedding or a garden party and look smooth. Did I mention I just like them?
You DO cop flack though from those who just don't get it. They get very sarcastic because they just don't get it. But they do get it deep down. Land Rovers have class, Toyotas and Nissans don't - they are good cars most of them but they have zero class - everybody knows it but no-one says it.

-1986 VL 3L Commodore (For wife and kids. Still have it after 8 years. 420,000km…270,000km on LPG. With savings relative to running on ULP, the car has only cost me $1500 in the time I’ve owned it..that's including original purchase)
-1986 Landrover 110 County 3.5L V8 (Stommies on LPG…loved it)
-1998 Yamaha DT230 (Fun, but not enough power..sold this year)
-1985 Landrover 110 County 3.9L V8 (Injected and on LPG..nearly love it as much as the last one…will get there soon :wink: ....current vehicle)
It's simple to work on. Like others have said, they just need a bit of TLC

There have been some memorable cars amongst that lot, but nothing ingrains itself into you like a Landy. I still get a thrill today, pulling up out of a serious 4wd track and just driving off onto the bitumen - that sudden change from bush-basher to classy tourer.

1. Renault something or other - cost me 275 pounds when I was a student and lasted a month
2. Company Citroen Xara - flogged it as I didn't pay a penny on it. Terrible car also
3. 2002 VW Golf - Nice car, well built but pretty sluggish
4. Nissan 350 Z - **** off a shovel and rediculously good at high speed but at the end of the day, it was a Nissan and rattled like buggery and had too much cheap plastic inside the cock pit. Excercised my speed demonds though
5. 2003 Commodore Acclaim wagon - had a kid! - Comfortable for long drives but again, mass produced plastic for what you pay for.
6. Finally, after years of yearning to own a 4x4 I bought a 1999 S2 TD5 manual Disco for bouncing round the bush. Paid $24k for it and have since spent a small fortune bolting things to it. Goes everywhere I have pointed it so far and genuinely amazes me when it does what I ask it to do. Stock these things are far superior than anything else but the main additions to help bushability are reconnecting the CDL, 2" suspension lift, winch bar, remapped ECU plus a host of recovery equipment for the inevitable day I push it too far. Have always liked the Land Rovers - perhaps because I am Scottish and have grown up around them - but as the advert says, "it does exactly what it says on the tin!"

Why did I buy a Landy ... 'cos I want to go bush regularly - need a vehicle that is suitable to put clients in for work, as well as dragging the family away for trips. As so many have said before ... if you maintain them - there is no STANDARD 4x4 as capable. Simple as that..

I share much of the views already expressed here. Only take somebody serious when they've owned the vehicle they are putting **** on. Personally, I cannot think of anything wrong with a Toyota or Nissan ... so buy what best suites you.
