Actually you're close. It may be that too many ferns growing in the forks may have caused rot to spread.
We have a tree expert coming in to give advice. Meanwhile we have already lopped several branches, but I suspect a lot more will have to go. It's an old and very large tree.
The good thing is we should have plenty of timber for winter. I just have to mix some fresh fuel and get the chainsaw going so I can cut it up to dry out.
Also, although it fell on our new dog-proof fence, the main trunk was held up by several branches and the fence survived without real damage.

A report from a suitably qualified arborist helps.

But you probably still have to go through the council or state govt process,and pay something
