    The area would need to be isolated for the whole mass of the ship to be concentrated there

    Of course it would have been, do you thing all those Engineers were idiots? Postage stamp?


    In those circumstances the Water would be free to expand sideways instead of being forced downwards. In the Canal, expansion space was limited, according to that earlier explanation.

    I believe there are millions of tonnes of reclaimed "soil" over the top of the"Chunnel" over it's length. Ship's anchors (dragging or otherwise) would also be safely guarded against.
