Do ships navigating the stretch of the English Channel, over the tunnel to France, have a weight limit?
During the design of the tunnel, was it taken into account that ships would get bigger and heavier, imposing greater stresses on the tunnel roof?

I literally just came up from the middle of the new Sydney Metro tunnel under Sydney Sydney Harbour and I didn’t even wonder about asking a question like that.

Of course it would have been, do you thing all those Engineers were idiots? Postage stamp?


In those circumstances the Water would be free to expand sideways instead of being forced downwards. In the Canal, expansion space was limited, according to that earlier explanation.

I believe there are millions of tonnes of reclaimed "soil" over the top of the"Chunnel" over it's length. Ship's anchors (dragging or otherwise) would also be safely guarded against.
