Probably should point out that most contrails do not originate from the exhaust of the engines, but from condensation that is the result of the pressure reduction in airflow over the wings and structure (especially wing tips and engine nacelles) in atmosphere that is already close to the dewpoint.

Yes if you watch a jet overhead with a good pair of binoculars you can see this occurring.
