I think she needs a Dakar homologation Pajero Evolution.
3.5L 6G74 MIVEC engine, 194kW. Mid to late 90's vintage. Total baller.
DO IT!
The Rav4 that my mate's wife has is just a lifted Camry with a twinky little rear diff added. Good on the beach but I wouldn't take it seriously off road. The lowest engine accessory on the front of the motor is the a/c compressor which is direct drive (no clutch, just an internal valve) and it's sooo close to the front right chassis rail that a small knock will see it break the drive and disable the vehicle. I fixed one that had been involved in a minor shunt.
Oh and they're not actually all that small, they have a footprint as big as a RRC.
I'd suggest a Subie or a Freebie. A Forester will get most places and do it in comfort.

Still missing my old 96 Diesel - RIP
Just a caution re Suzukis. The 2.4 petrol 4 cylinder engine is known for cracking its engine block.
I'm still looking for a picture of the Daughter![]()
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Hi I went through this same scenario with my daughter.
I ended up buying a disco 1 v8 on gas. 99 model for her
She had that for 5 years and went everywhere we did.
She now has a 2009 BMW twinn turbo diesel, but doesn't come out bush with us anymore as she got married and is trying to start a new life with hubby.
She did learn a lot from the disco and I made her change tyres etc and supervised her doing oil changes, all good for her I believe in dealing with cars for the future.
Good luck with whatever you find..for the money she wants to spend I would go for a D3 or if she is set on a defender..great..now go and find a good one!

What would life be without a Rangie?
$10k would buy her a good Disco 1 or Pajero and she would have money left over to mod it (or go for a holiday).
Our daughter is pretty happy with her X-Trail, but it depends on what your daughter wants to do with it.

Another vote here for the X-Trail (not the new shape - the one that has been around a while and just been superseded). I know plenty of people who have these and al are happy with them.
Unless of course you can find a good Freelander II for the money you are prepared to spend.![]()
Cheers .........

On a serious note, the wifeys nephew has a '13 Challenger which I have to admit is quite a nice (& capable) wagon!
