Thread: Wollogorang Cattle station sold

Shame to hear of another big purchase by Chinese buyers. What is our Government thinking allowing this sort of think to happen? I have also fished the Calvert many times, mainly coming in from the Robinson river side (7 emus). Lots of big jacks and barra, and big lizards. One of the biggest I have seen was about 6-7 metres up near the mouth where there is a tributary that goes to the east right near the beach.

I have spent time on seven emu station to the west.
It is magnificent country.
Cant see the long term wisdom in allowing such large areas of our country being in international hands.
I doubt this change of ownership will mean anything good for those wanting access to the rivers or coastlines of the gulf?

I heard that the chinese govt. has $3 trillion to purchase land and farms. Still I'm sure they will sell us some beef after they have fed their own.

Not sure of the exact figure but it is something like that. I've just come out of China and they are very up front about it. They are not targeting Australia specifically, but its about securing food into the future for the country by investing into foreign agriculture.

The beef however.... I don't think we will see much of it.

I hope you are right Bearman the property should stay Australian owned.

We also have spent many happy months at Seven Emus. We would sit with old Willie Shadforth -the owner- and he would tell us all sorts of stories (some may have been a bit stretched!!) but he was a wonderfully entertaining person. Willie passed on in 2000 and last time we were there his son, Frank was running the place. You are right when you say it is magnificent country up in that area.

The track that Brian mentioned in the previous comment, which would take you from Seven Emus to the Calvert and beyond, was unfortunately closed about 12 years ago. That would have been the last time we were in that part of the Gulf.

There was a show on TV many years ago "Northern Safari" which showed a lot of area around the Robinson River...and the massive crocodiles that lived there!

I guess no-one in Australia wanted to buy it.

I was there in 1976 when they put a new floor in the kitchen.

They went out and knocked down a number of anthills crushed them up and tamped it down as the new floor.

Things may have changed since then but I was stunned to see how archaic things were being done.

The price the chinese paid may be cheap .....they may have to invest heavily.

I may be out of touch with how it is out there now , maybe someone on the forum has been there recently and can inform me.
