Thread: Grrr darn road works!!!!!

Road works is what I do for a living.Is there traffic control on the job??? If so why are they allowing you to travel thru the worksite whilst the cement is being spread???
Water truck is probably full of salty water too.Our guys wet cars for fun,at least its drinking water as we cart drinking water we cant use salty creek or dam water in the same truck.

I dont know, they are taking the P. The water truck was doing the other side but soaking me and just down the road the cement truck was spreading cement on the other side but the cement cloud was 50 meters, you just could not see. I arrived home and the Defender was wet and grey. a film of wet cement was all over my new car. I spent a couple of hours jetting the Defender under and over (even into the rad) then washing it. This is becoming annoying, just no respect for peoples cars.
I am starting to get fed up with this.

How long is this section of road Chris? A bit of dirt is fine but that cement dust is a worry.

Hi Chris , I can understand why your not happy . A bit of water is one thing but water and Cement dust together on your new truck , is not a good combination , I hope It all came off OK . Jim ..

Would a really good wax help with future cleaning efforts

Yes it came off, I ran out of time last night so I will wax it again today. There was quite a bit of grey cement in the gutters so I spent a bit of time cleaning all the difficult to reach bits.
There is maybe 3km of road works they are laying red road base which is quite clay in nature and they are wetting it. Then another truck passes over it dumping a thick layer of cement and a grader later mixes the red road base with the cement. Then they roll it and we drive on it, but yesterday we were let through went the cement was being dumped and the water truck was at work. The cloud of cement was unbelievable, not good even if the car had been dry, but worse when it was wet.
I am not convinced they know what they are doing, one section they have layed a thin layer of bitumen to prevent surface break up before the final layer of bitumen. The problem is this thin layer has broke up badly and not the surface it badly pot holed.

Nasty. I had something similar 6 years back when I moved house. I moved myself with an old Falcon SW and a trailer so I was up and down the highway a few times a day while they were re-doing the surface. At least the water truck blokes got used to me and turned off the sprayer when I went past - but the underneath of the vehicles got plastered and I didn't realise how bad at the time.

The cement is used to stabalise the clay.The seal coat is to keep water out,its only temporary I would think.If they are using clay and cement that is more than likely just a sub base and will get further layers of gravel or other road-base materials depending on whats available.Clay isnt the best material to use in a wet area,hence the addition of cement.We are experiminting with a polymer additive at the moment.A 2kg bottle does the same job as 1 tonne of cement.Impressive stuff.
