    Import duty

So, what happens when you import an item worth over $1000? Do they hold the item until you pay? How do they now whether the item is over $1000?

The freight company shipping the item will work out if its over $1K (using the day's exchange rate I suppose) and once it's in Australia they'll send you an invoice for customs clearance and GST. Once you've paid the freight company they'll send it on. I've done it twice in the last couple of years, you can pay via credit card (quickest) or direct debit. Just make sure your phone and email are included in the original invoice with the item so they can contact you quickly. If they don't have an invoice I imagine they'll take a guess and act accordingly.

I think the $1,000 includes freight, not just the item price.

PM Vlad, he knows this stuff.

Determination of duty is based on the following...

Purchase Price of item + Shipping
    If over $1000

then GST payable is calculated as 10% Purchase Price of item + Shipping

If duty is payable then this is calculated on the value of the taxable import which is Purchase Price of item + Shipping + GST

Duty rates are normally 5% or 10%.

value of the item is normally determined based on invoices produced however if Customs (now Aus Border Force) believes the invoice to be dodgy they can assign market value to the goods.

Fedex / DHL / etc will work this out for you and submit the relevent paperwork. In the case of FEDEX and DHL they will often pay the required duty and GST to release the goods into there warehouse and then recover costs from you prior to delivery.

    hope this helps,
    Paul

Usually you will get a phone call by the agent once it is ready to clear customs, usually you just pay over the phone by credit card. The item is then released to the transport provider for delivery and it gets delivered. A bit different if you pick up, but only on the release side.
Yes it includes freight, but depends on what the retailer that sends the product put on the paperwork. Especially important that your contact details are very clear.
When I have dealt with TNT had no issues and they have taken care of it all.

Duty is calculated on FOB value (generally invoice total ) and GST is CIF value = cost+ duty +freight+insurance x 10% .

General duty rate is 5%, most engine parts are duty free and accessories are 5%, tyres are also duty free under a concession.

And DHL is quite happy to charge approximately 6 times their cost to do so. Avoid shipping with them if at all possible, they are rip off artists of the first water.

Fedex and the rest will also add there fee $80, plus gst, plus you need to factor in the 3/4% exchange rate your bank adds on
