    have to wonder

what would you say to a mechanic that fits HT tyres to the front of a 4wd vehicle that has AT's on it to start with so the vehicle now has mixed breeds of tyres?

i personally think it is dangerous

    whats your opinion?

Sounds dangerous, but even if it's not, it's still stupid.

I once had a RRC 77 which I fitted BFGAT on the front to and BFGMTs on the back.
    It was fine .
AFAIR the reason was that the MTs made the steering really "nibbly", and tended to make the turn in sharp.

Seeing most of the traction uphill is from the back, they worked fine.

BTW all trucks have steering tyres and traction tyres, and nobody suggests that they are dangerous.

Yeah, but a trucks steer tyres aren't driven.

Not sure if that makes a difference, but I wouldn't want a mismatched pair myself - you'd have to carry 2 spares if nothing else.

Not a drama. I have often run different tyres front and rear. I only prefer the same tyres all round because I have a touch of OCD.

The important thing is to have about the same diameter.

I'd say it was a big It Depends. Straight line braking, especially in the wet would improve, understeer on high speed bitumen corners might tend towards oversteer instead, traction on muddy roads would probably stay very similar. If driven with normal care I'd be OK with it. Like everything, it's a compromise.

It's just a different perspective on the 'mechanics must be stupid' and 'the world will explode if you do' sentiments that have been alluded to in previous posts.
It works in some applications, and that's my point (even if it is in a car that is entirely engineered for one purpose). There's nothing to say that someone might find a complitely novel way to utilize AT /HT combo of tyres in their own applications... on a theoretical level at least.
