I would imagine he didn't even look at what the other tyres where and just got what he either had or what the tyre place recommended, just because he's a mechanic doesn't mean he knows everything about cars.

is the Paj the vehicle in question ?? and if so, how often does it go into 4WD ?.
Sure can I can also say ADR's and manufactures reccomendations. on a good day I cna even spell themwithout help from Ron, Autocorrect or spell chekc.
ADR's ad the manual only require that the wheels be the same size (within tolerance) (there are exceptions for some vehicle to the ADRS where different size tyres are used front to rear but the vehicle must be designed this way) but they must be the same tread pattern across the axle
the rolling resistance of the tyres wont make any real difference to a vehicle especially an AWD or open centered 4wd like a subie or a landy.
and yes it will upset the "balance" of the vehicle a little but the that might just be what the owner wants it to do, like say fitting a wind boost to save stretching his right big toe and extra inch.
