Absolutely true but to achieve profitability many manufacturers need to export as well, on order to achieve the economy of scale that allows for competitive pricing.
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.

And this is one of the major reasons why it's not quite that simple.

And the problem is not just with our government.

My Cousin is a Captain in the US navy and is President Obama's doctor in the White House.

About 18 months ago, my mother went over there for a visit and my cousin gave her a guided tour of the White House.

During the tour, mum popped into the White House's souvenir shop and bought so gifts for the family.

She gave me a cap. It's a great looking cap, with the President's seal and a couple of US flags on it and then when I turned it over, here is this large tag inside stating "MADE IN CHINA"

My mother did not see this when see bought the cap, and was not impressed!!!!

So until major governments support their own manufacturing, the rest of use haven't got a hope.

You do it! Don't concern yourself about what others are doing. No excuses.

    conversely.

if you want australia to have manufacturing industries then the industries have to make and sell, for a reasonable price, what people want.

.... it is so simple. no excuses , no ifs , no buts , no maybes , there's the answer.

One of the government ministers let it slip the other day, we are ,on top of the roughly 5 million tons made here, IMPORTING, over 3 million tons of steel!
Now that would put port Kembla back to full production and Whyalla as well! With us still falling about 3-400,000 tons short!
As for price we would be in a level playing field, but if the opposition is government owned and can write off $25 billion usd in 10 months what hope do we have?
A few are screaming " it will put our ffs free trade deals at risk" yet , others here have raised the USA , who have a 50% minimum local steel content on anything that they do. They have also just put a 267% tarriff on Chinese steel imports, but obviously their dumber than our leaders who claim we would be in breach of agreements, aren't they?
