    Bog Out Recovery System

Has anyone used/seen in use one of these in real life? On my last D2 I used the winch once in 10 years to recover myself. Could this product along with some Max Tracks be cheap insurance. I agree, it won't protect against animal strikes but that's another issue.

I suspect that you would need to travel very straight to keep the tyre between the two outside ropes. In some situations, that would not be possible.

It is quite a simple idea and does seem to work well when circumstances are ideal.

NB. This is based on viewing the video, not on personal experience.

they dont quite sit level with the tread, they wrap up the side wall a little like snow chains.

IVe done the poormans version only to prove that it does work and that was done in ideal circumstances. You could replicate ideal circumstances in any situation if you had enough gear on hand to do the ground work and anchor them.

I Reckon they'd be good on slippy mud and climbs as once they've wrapped on they'd act like snow chains and that might give you enough extra traction to keep on keeping on where as with a max tracks once you're past the end you're back on your rubber on the planet again.

    Thats only a theory.

Does your experiment suggest that the way the side ropes come part way up the tyre completely eliminates the problem or just reduces the problem of the tyre getting too far off line?

Or does it all boil down to how well the anchor point is aligned with the direction of travel?

Do a search, I am pretty sure these have been discussed before - in recovery.
I would think with an open diff they would not work too well as drive would be going to the wheel with the least amount of traction.

I'd be buying/making this system before I'd buy a 'bog out'..

Given I was using ratchet strap straps yeah the experiment ment the lines had to be kept perfectly, the way the bog outs work was simply an observation of the video. Id guess they might tolerate 5 degrees of out of alignment but I wouldnt want to be the one to have one slip off to the inside of the wheel.

IF have good traction on one side and none on the other thats all you need but I suspect that the intent is that you run out 2 of them. I would.

But if you dont have an open diff if you have any kind of aid in there from a primitive LSD through true track, locker E diff or electronic traction control its going to get you out IF it doesnt come apart.

I have bought a pair of them with extension ropes off the Free Range Camping. They seem to be having a special with included extension ropes. Having an e-diff helped decide. I'll report back if I ever have to use them.

As by that video. They wind up around your wheel, so using your Tyre as a winch drum. So if you have to use them for most of there length there is going to be some unraveling from your Tyre. Or you could move forward to unwind the bog out and straight back to where you started ..... Looks ok if you wan`t to reverse out. Just not sure about getting it of the wheel easily though. Does not show it being used on the front wheels to drive out forwards.

the manual on the site ( I looked it up ages ago) says that you just drive on them and keep going untill youve got enough space to back up and unwind them off the tyre presumably after re-anchoring them.
