    just think how small and usable a tirfor is ....... then all these gizmos seem a bit pointless

    Never used one, from reading the instructions, unless the thing is set up perfectly, you have the possibility of damaging the bits on the inside of the wheel [ brake bits, etc.] It has to be a straight line pull, and they say you can use another vehicle as an anchor point [ you would use a snatch, surely?] Not saying they don't work, just don't know anyone who has used one. Here is the FAQ and instructions.They also say they use them in their 4x4 hire fleet, as the only recovery device.
