Because the Govt cannot support EVERYTHING.
Jeez, I get sick of hearing it,...the Govt should support this, the govt should support that,.....etc etc etc,.....what else would you have the govt do in relation to the subs, where it has been openly spoken that if they were built O/S, the cost would be 30% less,......but in this instance the Govt IS building them here to stimulate employment/jobs etc etc, even though 30% more is going to come out of the public purse,....ya can't have it both ways.

I'm not talking about the Government. I'm talking about Australia and what we all want. If we could save / create more jobs by buying Australian Steel and other manufactured products across the board, and that meant we couldn't afford to build the Subs, why would we choose to build the Subs?

Sorry but I find this whole argument now about supporting local industry and business quite amusing in one way and sad in another.

Why? I remember a long thread that went on for weeks back around 2010 if I remember right with the majority of members in here who took part complaining about local business and why support it when you can buy the same product overseas via the internet for much cheaper and how the locals were all rip offs.

i warned back then that if the majority adopted that attitude of buy overseas and not support local business then it would potentially wreck local business and cause massive job losses, many here basically said 'so what we are getting ripped off so stuff them'.

At that time I said this was a very short sight daft approach and after quite a number of heated debates I said lets have this discussion again in a few years and see how many have lost their jobs or had a lower standard of living from it. Well it looks like this debate is kind of happening here again but this time from the complete opposite angle, which was always predictable.

Now its not only cheap car parts and clothes from overseas, its cheap services like IT and just about any job that can be done via the internet which has meant some well paying jobs are now either pretty much gone or paid a lot less.

The thing that amazed me at the time was how many couldn't see what was coming from not supporting local business. As for cheap imported steel sending Aussie steel works broke here well that's not really any different than buying cheap shoes, clothes, car parts etc from overseas, ultimately the outcome is the same Australian jobs lost.

australia does well competing with other countries when it comes to services.
i dont know, i guess our education?
services is generally a cause of you get what you pay for.

its why outsourcing results in unhappy customers.

ever called telstra, optus or vodaphone and tried to get something fixed? if its not on the script, they cant fix it.

i work with a lot of outsourced IT teams and they never do the job as well. can follow instructions, no, they cant even do that half the time. they cant think.
