The question that should be investigated is why didn't the technology in the vehicle avoid the accident.

Oh, and before these things are allowed on the roads, there should be a clear understanding of who is at fault should there be an incident.

Didn’t look like the occupant was even looking at the road, but yes, why didn’t the technology see her - the dark makes no difference to it.

Is this really G rated though? I know it doesn’t show the impact but ‘Warning Graphic Content’ as the start of the video says is hardly something that needs posting here IMO and we know a milli second later she was fatally injured. Doesn’t seem to fit here I don’t think...

Correct,not the nicest thing to see.

But one thing it does show is the vehicle should well and truely have picked up the victim and at least braked heavily or swerved.

The victim was in the wrong as well,unless they were on a crossing.

Something very wrong there,and as others have said,I wonder who is to blame,but we may not find out for months.

In fact that accident would be one where a person driving may not see the victim,but the vehicle should have picked her up.These vehicles apparently can react quicker than a driver,but that didn’t happen in this case.

ABC News is G rated.

Q is, why didn't the autonomous braking work? Was it because the impact was on the side of the vehicle? Is there a gap in the field of sensors?

You could be right as far as the internet pages go, but the TV news certainly isn"t depending on the time of day - it can show M rated content after 7.30 and MA15+ after 9.30. My point was more around th standards this forum tries to uphold, but alas, this has been sliding for some time.

That is the million dollar question - been watching some tech channels with some people that have had things to do with LIDAR and with the exact type that Uber use - by all accounts it shoukd have seen the bike and woman a long way off - most people seem to be pointing the finger at Uber's program developers and how quickly they rolled this out due to their financial difficulties and their desire to remove all their drivers ASAP

Autonomous braking is an option with my wife's Mazda 2, so it's not exactly unusual technology.

Yes, but do we know whether Mazda's autonomous braking would have done any better?
