Investigation: RO-2018-014 - Derailment of freight train in Devonport, Tasmania on 21 September 2018
Yep - Tassie does not have "driverless" trains and has no plans to implement them in the foreseeable future. The media is good at twisting words to sensationalize stories and sell copy - or maybe the so called "journalists" these days are simply too lazy or not competent to do a bit of basic investigation.
The term "automated" trains in Tassie refers to a new system of track and train safeworking control recently implement - it has nothing to do with "driverless" trains.
Cheers .........

Tasrail suspends the use of remote control technology | The AdvocateTasrail has suspended the use of remote control hand-held technology on all of its services until the conclusion of investigations into an incident on Friday.
The announcement was made on Saturday after Devonport made national news when a driverless TasRail freight train with 16 wagons loaded with cement derailed on the waterfront, injuring two people.
A spokesperson from TasRail said the technology had been utilised by the company for more than 15 years in loading operations at freight terminals.
If they were broke before they will be "broker" now as those damaged wagons will not be cheap to fix, and of course the locomotive is probably badly damaged also.

Top Gear had some suggestions towards more affordable, non autonomous trains.
What is the point of having an autonomous vehicle if you have to sit at the ready to take control the instant that autonomy fails?
Automated vehicles may bring a new breed of distracted drivers - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
They shouldn't be calling them autonomous in the first place IMO. They should be cars with 'Driver Assistance'. An autonomous car to me has no steering wheel, pedals, etc - just a large comfy interior for me to read, sleep and sip whiskey in while I get taken to my destination. Until then, they aren't....
Mind you, can't wait for that to happen - work would have to run out and buy all its Reps new cars because they take OH&S so seriously and are always telling us that driving is the most dangerous thing a Sales Rep will do at work, so they will have no problems forking out mega dollars for the latest tech to help protect us right???....![]()
