I bought a flatscreen 46" colour TV almost 4 years ago and we were watching it last week when the picture just went black, sound was OK though. So as it was out of warranty we took it to a well known local TV repair company who informed us that it was uneconomical to repair as parts are not longer available. The "backlight" had failed.
Being somewhat annoyed at this, I have fired off an E-Mail to the company involved and awaiting an answer, which I'm guessing will be all smoke and mirrors. I won't name the brand because of Forum rules but as we intend to buy another TV can anybody out there who knows a thing or two about TV's suggest a brand that will last more than four years.

We've got a sony (not cheap) and even that has started to develop a bit of double vision at times. It is currently curable by giving it a good old fashioned technical whack (possible short somewhere ?)
I suspect they all have built-in obsolescence unfortunately.
Makes me wonder if Aldi's (sorry dig) cheapies are the way to go

Yeah Aldi's have good prices when they get TV's in, but you don't know how long you have to wait. I have been thinking of Samsung as my youngest daughter has a Samsung 32" that she has had for years without trouble.
ps. I was thinking of upsizing a little to a 50" or 55" as I like watching movies with my surround sound gear.
A friend owns a tv repair shop, he always says LG are not the best, but they do carry spares for longer than most other brands and they are reasonably easy to fix.

I've just been through all that Jim, I sought advice from a TV mechanic friend who works for a major hire mob. She said to get a well known brand; Sony, Samsung, LG etc.
A few years ago she said "Call me and I'll tell you what cheapie brand uses the same innards as the high end. "
That advice is no longer sound.
I ended up with a Sony, I wish I could drive it, it does everything except iron my shirts.

It should have USB port to plug into your computer and do updates etc.
We have a big Philips must be 10yr old and every so often when we remember we plug it in to update.
Its a plasma , it has back light, it's just a great tv , only pixillation is when theres storms around.
I would go Philips for my next one , just based on previous experience.
btw our old crt philips is in the shed in perfect working order , my son and I were thinking of hooking it up to Fox purely for sports watching.

I buy cheap, after a lightening strike took one out 3 days old.
I now operate off a ups and surge protector, including the coax.
However when the power pole outside the house is on fire due to lightening, it's all over.

Hi Jim. Our Samsung plasma is about 8 I think. Still works fine, even though the kids leave it on all day. Our little Sanyo LED, that Nanna gave us, is old too and it still cranks. I'd say get a known Brand. Plasmas are great but they chew up the juice.
