I too get continual 'invalid sessions' and 'Fatal Errors', just like Ron and Trev, and I'm running a different OS and softwear. (Win 98, Zone Alarm Pro and Vet.)
I can't post a new topic until I post a reply to someone elses thread, after refreshing due to an 'invalid session'. Once that is overcome, it's plain (plane ?) sailing for as long as I have AULRO on a current screen.
It's the ONLY forum I have any problems with, and I've tweaked ZAP as far as I know how.

$HIT ! spoke too soon. Far'n Fatal Error and Invalid session !

all of the above errors are solely related to session cookies.

to do what this site has to do, it needs a way to know who is doing what and when, that is what a session cookie is, your id in the processes running on the server. If i dont use them, the site will be hacked like many of the big sites are, on a regular basis.

there are 4 possible causes to your heartache :-

1) some software you have installed is interferring with cookies or is not handling cookies correctly.

2) your isp is running an incorrectly configured transperant proxy (very common problem)

3) your isp or bandwidth provider is deliberatly interferring with session cookies ( stops people doing non business things on business links ) Many goverment departments in a few different states deliberately block this style of site.

4) you are using Internet explorer on a Mac

the most common causes for scenerio 1

This approaches religious status in some peoples eyes so please forgive my blasphamy, but you wanted the truth

Norton Internet Security, MacAfee, Zone Alarm and Internet explorer will do it everytime, as will most internet firewall software which tries to preempt what is or isnt dangerous. NIS is a lost cause and in my opinion malware in it's own right. MacAfee is very close behind NIS, Zone Alarm has at least 5 known back doors so is more dangerous than what you want it to stop, Internet explorer needs some of it's default settings changed to correctly handle session cookies.

want a smooth ride on the net, dump NIS, MacAfee, Zone alarm and IE...

install an antivirus that doesnt invade your entire system, even avg free is better than norton AV. Install firefox or Mozilla, and if you must have a firewall use something such as Sygate (free), there are heaps of good ones out there that cost bugger all.

scenerios 2 and 3 are a bit out of your control

scenerio 4 is an easy fix, use safari or install firefox or camino

FYI, there is NO difference in the way XP Home and XP Pro handle TCPIP internet traffic so it is not a factor. There is a difference in the networking code but it is not in the tcpip area.

Are you saying the change in scroll bar colours to invisible when I enter a forum is session cookies? Or wasn't this included in "all of the above". I have since found that if I use Mozilla 1.4 instead of Konqueror 3.1.4 (which is itself an overlay of KDE on Mozilla), the effect is still there but the colour of the scroll bar and button is just barely distinguishable. Also got my first "invalid session" yesterday, but your explanation probably means a problem with my ISP - which I fully believe.

At home i have no problems at all as we don't have ANY antivirus software on the puter, we have Ghost instead, and at work to solve the problems that everyone is getting (i used to get the same problems) i delete all my cookies and temporary intenet files once a week whether they need deleting or not.

this forum uses a modded version of php-nuke and a modded version of phbb forum.

phpnuke is a pain in the butt to secure..... if i had my time again i wouldnt use it

yes aulro has some problems some other forums dont have, but it is usually more reliable, tho slower cause of the gear i have it running on. i am madly saving trying to buy a new rack mounted server to speed it up, but is all money honey...
