Police ambulance and the fire brigade all must obey the road rules (I am a fire fighter). There are special dispensations, but whatever is happening you are expected, actually trained to drive in a defensive manor. There is a great advanced driving course for the fire brigade where you slide a fire truck all over the place and push it too its limits. On the road though you need to obey the rules more than anyone as the general public see flashing lights and do unexpected stupid things so the emergency services driver needs to anticipate this. I am not surprised the cop is indicating it will be second nature for the driver. Also if things go pear shaped and the Police driver has done anything wrong like not indicating resulting in an accident you would not want to be in his shoes...

That was hilarious! How can 3 cop cars not catch an asthmatic old 4WD pulling a caravan? What a joke...

There's more to that than the obvious, he's off his face and didn't realize the cops were there.

Maybe he thought he was trying out for the upcoming caravan and dunny demolition derby

Seriously, those cops should have had the skill and expertise to get one or two cars in front and sandwich that POS to a standstill.

I'd imagine the cops thought that provoking a lunatic was not worth the potential carnage and figured they'd catch him soon enough when he stopped to make himself a cuppa.

UPDATE: POLICE have arrested a 33-year-old man, of no fixed address, in relation to the incident.
The man was arrested at Hungry Head Beach carpark and charged with stealing and traffic matters relating to the pursuit.
He was refused bail to appear in court on Tuesday.

What the police should be allowed to do and what they are allowed to do are different things.
It's not like it was a high speed chase, why bother trying to take him down? Let him run out of puff and grab him quietly

Exactly, way to much risk in a chase.

Just follow from a distance,no lights and sirens….....
