A friend had a Tdi Defender (forget which year) - he claimed 8-9L/100km on the freeway?but sold it because he kept having to spend to keep it running.

For a D-D, you need reliability, plus reasonable running co$t$. - Treat it as an 'appliance'.

I used to use my Classic v8 for that, but when there was a chance to use any others in the family fleet...
Now I use a 98 Mazda Protege and have managed 40 mpg on the open road, usually 35+
The BMW Mini at 47mpg (open road again, sensible driving) was very addictive...
SWMBO has a late model Magna, seats are nearly as good as Sarah's...

No, none have seats / entry-egress as good as the Rangie, but, my wallet complains a lot less.

And, NO breakdowns or silly servicing.

Keep a Land Rover 110/130 for what it's good at... Off-Road stuff.

I used to use my 100" as a daily drive. On gas. 240km/day.
    It went quite well.
A 110 would be good but why not a Perentie? Convert to a hard top. Low km. Well priced (a GS model without winch). A reasonably economical diesel.

We use a Mazda 2 for commuting. 'George' the Defender could do it, but he'd rather stay at home and prepare for bigger challenges.

    Yep, an easy decision really!
My Isuzu county has just clocked up another set o zero's.
Engine untouched, uses no oil, and consistently returns 10ltr/100km, on the highway, traffic or on in the bush.
    A practical, economical all rounder.

    My 110 is a daily drive. (Isuzu 4BD1, Turbo) and I get between 11.8 and 13.5 l/100km... Mostly 12.6.

I do all the regular maintenance myself - this keeps the costs down BUT I've had lots of little problems that you'd expect with a 30yo vehicle. They are hot, cold, noisy, slow, thirsty and inconvenient (too tall for most carparks in urban areas). Also spent 7 years and 50k fixing it up and making it what I want it to be.

If you get a parentie then you'll forgo AC, Power steering, carpet etc. That is pretty hardcore for a daily drive. You'll be deaf in no time as well

Not trying to put you off - I'm taking my Isuzu 110 to the grave. The only time it will be retired as a daily is when I need airbags and better safety for kids.
