If in reasonable condition, should be reliable - but I doubt that even on LPG you will get the cost down that low. You need an Isuzu engined one, but these seem to be hard to find (those who have them are not parting with them!

Hi all,
I currently own a Nissan Navara which use as my daily driver doing about 650km a week averaging about 10l/100km.
Anyway if like to get back into Landy ownership and don't want to pay mega bucks for a late model Defender. So my brain is thinking about a V8 110 wagon.
Will it survive doing that many km a week? It needs to be reliable. I'm happy to fix it up a bit. If it were on LPG would its cost to operate be around the same as 10 litres of diesel per 100km at 1.20 a litre?

A 3.5 v8 if you dont flog it should get you the equivalent of 10l per 100k on diesel...if my 2.5 tonn 4.6 manual D2 can do so (ie 16-17l per 100k lpg) then a nicely tuned 3500 in under 2 tonns should do so.
Cheers
What makes you think the 110 is under 2 tonnes? Maximum mass is 2.950, and few would have an empty mass under 2.0. Add to that a carburetter not fuel injection, and low compression, plus lower gearing and higher CD. driven very carefully, unloaded, you might get as low as a D2, but I would not count on it. Also remember that the newest 110 is about ten years older than the oldest D2.

Like John says, if you want a v8 110 the youngest will be 26 years old (assuming LRA were still selling V8s in 1990). A lot will have been scrapped as the got older, fuel prices went up and they fell in value. Most will be older than 30 years. You will be lucky to find one that's still in great condition.

I am going off my brothers 3500 County 110 inch. Very light with no gear and set up as a simple daily driver. I know its carb but lpg on a carb can be set up quite efficiently.
Cheers
I used to use my V8 county as a commuter and tourer. Never really got it under 20l/100 on petrol. Have a mixer lpg mostly around 25 litres/100. With gas prices what they are and with recent drops there back there again, cost all up was quite reasonable
Nothing really wrong with running an olde daily, but the small stuff, heat controls, stuck wipers, flaky indicators/brake lights, speedo, door locking, etc. The ride is exceptional for a vehicle of this type and age.
I ran it for 4 years, but the constant tinkering does grate. The parts are cheap and readily available, and everything can be fixed with half decent tool box, multimeter and wires et al.
They are a fun car to drive and I still have mine I still take love taking it out regularly on weekends.

I've had a couple of County 110 3.5L v8 wagons, a TDi and some Pumas. The v8's typically used between 20L & 25L per 100Km. In my opinion a 200TDi or 300TDi would be a much better choice. The earliest model I'd consider would be a '94 as they were the first year with disk brakes all round. Assuming a fuel price of $1.10 per litre and the TDI costing $5k more than a County v8, a TDi would re-coup the extra cost in 18 months, have more power and a better resale value.
If it was me I'd go for a Tdi, preferably a 300 Tdi. Widely regarded as one of the bets engines LR ever fitted. Would be much cheaper than a V8 for commuting. Basic servicing is pretty DIY. If serviced regularly it should be reliable.
