You may not care about commercial scheduling when there is a fire but the (now) mostly private operators of airports do.
i dont care about private operators. i care about town burning and lives.
i dont know about the laws where you are, here we'll close the airport or requisition the airport if needed. its happened before.

I'd bet my nuts that you haven't closed down or requisitioned an international airport (eg Adelaide) though, because basically other than military thats the only place you're going to land a DC10.
Additionally airports that size are usually commonwealth land, and state laws are subservient to commonwealth.

it would be a last resort and not me personally.
in SA, the emergency services act allows an incident controller to do almost anything.

if a fire is bad enough to requisitioned an airport, you know its done for a good reason and **** has really hit the fan.

    DC-10 tanker

My experiences are the small air attack units are more effective. A fire line is never straight so does not conform to the flight line of a large transport aircraft so a lot of the drop can be ineffective plus large volumes of of water or retardant are dangerous for ground crews. Our appliances are fitted with sky facing strobe flashers so that air tankers know which ground controller they are dealing with. A controller forms part of the ground crew and has to be close to the drop zone to be effective.

The reason for air support is to knock down the intensity of the fire so ground crews can get in to knock the fire out completely.
    Cheers

You cant beat the 2 helitacs we have, should have a heap more.Ive been at fires where they are only traveling a few hundred meters to a km from the fire front to fill out of farmers dams. They are bloody effective.AWESOME to watch in action too.

As Andrew stated, helicopters give quick turnaround after a drop. A large transport aircraft is limited to primary airports and would be subject to the holding pattern over airports such as Perth.

it really depends on the kind of fire.
fast running grassfires, you want the small planes.

forrest fires, you want something bigger.
not saying the small aircraft are ineffective. well, actually, sometimes they are, and the fire hasnt been knocked down at all.
sometimes the small craft water drops dont penetrate the tree canopy.

point is, it never hurts to have the dc10 on standby during a big fire.
if it doesnt get used, who cares.
if it does get used, fantastic.
