    Angry Victorian boat rego woes

Went to our local Vic roads agency to register my John Welsford Design "Houdini" boat which I built 6years ago.
When we lived in NSW prior to retirement the boat didnt need rego as motor was under 5hp
everything was going well until we came to the HIN(hull identification number) bit on the form, obviously I dont have one. This threw the form checker lass into a spin she insisted I had to have one but couldnt tell me how to obtain one.
When I told her I was restoring another boat that had Vic rego numbers (but unregistered) and during the course of deconstruction I could not find a build or HIN plate, she asked if it was an old boat, said it could be 50 years old
Thats OK she said after 30yrs or more old, plates aren't needed
I kept asking questions but she was well out of her depth even after she rang a hotline to Vic roads for clarification.
I left with her saying I should ring Vic Roads and find info myself.
I rang them and got ring back we're busy messages every time
I may have to put some little white lies on the form as a last resort
    Cheers

A few years ago when I went to get mine done, the boat shop actually organised it. Although it's just a tinnie, (Quinnie) its still the same principle I guess.
Try your local boat shop, see what they can do (?)

    my experience

had the same issue when trying to register a 10ft duck punt. it had a vin? plate attached as it was only a couple of years old but the plate also indicated i couldnt attach anything more than a 2hp motor and i needed the engine number before they would register the boat i had just bought a 4hp. grr

years ago i had a 10ft punt and it had no plate or requirments for engine size attached and i bought that brand new in the early 80s.

i told the vic roads people i had two duck punts and how would i go registering the old one without a plate. no worries they said. just leave that section blank or no plate and put the age of the boat at 30 odd years. registered it on the spot. got home and having sold the old boat moons ago, i removed the plate from the newer boat and stuck on the rego numbers. problem solved.

this may help you, or may not. worth a try as vic roads lacks common sense and is only interested in the blank boxes having something in them. even a N/A will keep them happy.

ps i did ring the marine board of victoria and they stated if there were no numbers on the boat simply put N/A in the space and they would be happy.

Thanks cactus my thoughts are i will go to a different agency and fudge the age of the boat......ie claim its over 30yrs old to get around the plate issues

job done albeit with some smoke and mirrors

Sometimes I wonder who gets paid to make the rules, comming from NSW, VIC is a deadset Nannie state with all their regulations which seem to spider web everything

    Cheers
