Thread: Flinders Ranges NP renamed

That is interesting. They have chosen to add the Aboriginal name without discarding the European name.

They have hyphenated the name so that it becomes Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park.

I am aware of several others where the European name has been discarded in favour of the Aboriginal name, including Narawntapu National Park, which may be harder to pronounce, but certainly sounds more attractive than Asbestos Ranges NP.

I can't think of any others where they have kept the two parts of the name. Is this a first?

Seems slightly mad, this urge to rename everything. Perhaps joint names make sense, as we progress into a joint future (hopefully without some of the errors of the past) just seems like a knee jerk cringe reaction when the European name is completely discarded as seems to happen in some cases.

I like what they've done.

I can see good reason for returning some areas to the traditional names.

Places like Kata Tjuta just feel right with the traditional name, but I would not want to see the European names wiped totally from others, including the Flinders Ranges.

Hopefully shared names is another useful step to help break down the "us" and "them" thing a little further.

We all call this special place home......
