I wonder if the wiring was retrofitted to your 1890 house, electricity would have been very rare then.
Note, 1880 for Melbourne,so possible if a posh house, really took off in the 1920's
Golly - they don't make cables like they used to. When I bought my house ( build around 1890) in 1997 it still had the original wiring still working. It was cotton insulated twin cables inside a nice flat wooden conduit. All working perfectly.

By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Yes, electric light only became possible for even the very wealthy with their own generating plant in the 1880s. Power distribution in Australia started in the 1890s, but did not extend between the CBD until the early 1900s, and , as suggested, only became 'normal' in new houses in the capital cities well into the 1920s.
In 1890, houses would have normally have been lit by gas, which had replaced candles/oil lamps etc at least in those areas of the capitals that were fairly densely built up.
A house built in the 1890s and wired from the start would be extremely rare. Most likely it was wired in the 1920s, but possibly in the early 1900s.

Im chewing my way through Wizard The life and times of Nikola Tesla, a fascinating read, but heavy going. THE AC DC wars were epic .
The 1880's would have been DC

I reckon the AC DC feud would have been like the Beta V VHS back in the early eighties.

Yes with a lot more at stake, Tesler owned most of the AC patents but was largely dudded out of them. A brilliant man who wasn't business smart
