Has this ever happened to you?

Ok i was driving along in my trusty TR Magna at around 10pm on thursday night from Adelaide to Kingston SE, about 40 km to go and suddenly at 110 kmh the headlights went out. Luckily it was on a straight section of road and i braked and pulled up ok. Very dark night. Scared the bejesus out of me but i didnt panick. Luckily i had a "head light" and after checking under the bonnet at the fuses and relays i found the main headlight relay was melted. I used the AC relay and it got me going into town on low beam. Plenty Roo's around too. First time i used my leatherman in anger as well. That relay was really hot. I got a replacement relay today from a wrecking yard. Really strange that the relay went as all the headlight globes are standard wattage. Its all good now. Trusty old Magna will last a while longer. Best $350 i ever spent on a car.

    Cheers Rod

I had my auto lights on the D4 turn off at 5am in the morning at 110kmh,yes it was dark.
Fortunately when the headlights go out the Daytime Running Lights turn on,not as good as headlights,at least I had some light whilst I fumbled with the switch to turn the lights to manual on.

In my old 2dr range i was heading home after a weekend away and had just started a 2hr drive, motoring along and suddenly lost headlights.
Headlight stalk had partially melted but a strategically placed icy pole stick had them working again, that is until i hit a rough patch of road that shook the stick out and plunged us into darkness again .

Riding across to Perth night riding (BMW K100 motor bike not my push bike) on the Nullarbor plains is a touch silly with camels but I was young. At 10pm the lights went out abut 150km from the next road house. Pulled over and fiddled but nothing worked, A truck went past. Followed him to the road house in the dark. Next morning the lights worked! Spooky

In 1971, at night on the then dirt Eyre Hwy between Ceduna and the WA border, the lights went out. Great fun at speed!

Replaced the fuse and a bit further on, it happened again. Now the Hunter only had 3 fuses for all the electrics and I didn't have many spares to use.

So I had to find the problem. It was the boot light wire swinging around hitting the boot hinge. The plug hadn't been pushed fully home when the car was built so there was a little bit of metal still exposed.

Was it covered under warranty, or did they weedle their way out of it?

Not losing lights but nearly as bad was in the '70s, in a Qld Gov Defender, when I was heading North, hammering down a steep hill just North of Nambour (I'm sure some will know the hill) at around 100-110 kph, in the dark, when the bonnet lifted & bent itself over the roof.
From that time on I never went over 90 in the Defenders as I assumed the bonnet catch was not designed for such enormous speeds.

Dam sounds like some scary ones. Yep when I bought my defender (very rough Tdi) I was driving from melb to Qld, nearly to Yass on the Hume and the lights cut out. Yes its very dark on the hume is sections and the 110s brakes luckily worked. Many yrs ago in a mates Kingswood pannel van we duct taped 2 dolphin torches to the bonnet to drive back home from Phillip Island... was quite a drive.

Yep, in a magna also. 3 o'clock in the morning between Newman and Port Hedland, 110km/hr rounding a bend then total darkness. Lucky I was wearing brown jocks. (fuse blown for no apparent reason)
