You know, I haven't managed to break it yet.

The old swatch used to be quite good. solid metal pins, and plenty water resistant enough for general use.

That ticks all the important boxes for a 'real' watch... S/steel bracelet band, safety clasp, LEGIBLE dial, well-proportioned hands, minute hand reaches the inner end of the markers (or near enough to allow accuracy. - I prefer it to reach about 30 ~ 50% of the second marks)

ALL stainless steel case, and as a bonus...actually assembled in..... (drum roll...) AUSTRALIA !

Yep, the older Swatch watches were'nt bad either... the classic 'workers' watch, straightforward and plain black face/white hands & markers with 'second' divisions... was always 'out of stock'. Battery compartment had it's own hatch, and so was 'User-Replaceable'

Same wristband broke again (same job) and the watch fell into an open drum (washing parts) of Shellite cleaning fluid, it was in there for up to 1/2 an hour before I retrieved it, still have this watch and it still goes, though I don't wear it anymore, tough reliable watch, Regards Frank.
My first bought watch was a TISSOT 'Seastar' automatic. Great watch, lived on my wrist 24/7. Cost $45 new - back in the mid 70's. Had it for around 10 years... Serviced and cleaned once in it's life... a week before I lost it overboard sailing....

Somewhere in the Swan River is a luminous (Tritium) waterproof Swiss watch with an unreliable clasp... Cost $40 for the 'Service'.

Fading memory hints the case to be a tad more traditional than this, but the face is very familiar.

I have a quite expensive , very digitally smart Citizen Eco-Drive, Radio Controlled World Time Zone adjusted watch.

    It's a beautiful thing.

But sometimes when you're in the sun....and it needs to be....I cannot read the time.....there is too much shiny stuff glaring back.

And.....theres one dial on it I still can't understand though I've read the book many times.

    Simplicity really works with watches.

Unless you're out somewhere wearing this impressive looking gold and glass thing on your wrist which everyone comments about.....because it looks great.

Why do manufacturers insist on putting light coloured hands against a light background?

... Because it's not a 'time-piece', it's a . . . "Watch" (me) ...and personally, I'd love to see the return of the 437 differant levels of Wholesale Sales Tax...and these lumps of glittering rubbish can be taxed to the max... and leave functional watches with NONE or Minimal tax...

Best one I've seen was my old Omega, Gold watch. ... satin gold dial and thin gold hands and hour markers... Put up with it for a year, then replaced it with my first (and Last) QUARTZ Seiko diver's watch... Stayed with Automatic/mechanicals ever since.

My first watch was an Omega Seamaster. Bought it duty free in PNG 1969.
Lost it overboard sailing around Bougainville in 1974. Its probably still selfwinding away in the currents.
My wife then bought me a Rolex GMTmaster. Still goes but I havnt worn a watch since I retired in 1999.

    Not since 1999 / I'm impressed !

On the other hand... ... those Quiet Achievers, the Swiss, have really worked an absolute con-job on the whole world... 'persuading' all of us that we NEED to wear a miniature clock on our wrist.. where it either breaks/gets replaced with monotonous regularity,,,, or pay heaps for a watch made well enough to take it...
And the Swiss watchmaker has done very well out of this... fashion.
