I have been behind brand new patrols being driven from the port to storage yards and the layed down smoke like a destroyer. My brother in law told me years ago that diesel cars will eventually die a death as there is now way (for now) that they will continue to meet ever stricken emission laws. Funnily enough he bought a golf based on Vw's emission claims...

i always liked the look of the patrol and miss my old g60 at times....
I guess that's why they need twin engine oil filters...

We really are witnessing the end of heavy duty 4WD's. It's as if no one uses them for work anymore!? Or is it simply that mid-duty disposable dualcabs have taken over? We should all buy shares in metal and plastic recyclers I reckon.

Price had a lot to do with it,they were probably the best value vehicle in their class by a fair margin.

But after driving even a D2,you work out pretty quickly how rough they are.

As others have said, bullet proof, apart from the 3.0l.

And pretty damm strong,my BIL had a head on in his, with another GU the same year, build dates were two months apart.
Both vehicles were written off,as was the large twin axle van,no real injuries, all four people involved were very lucky.

looking around SA, the 3.0's are the only ones for sale. the 4.2, 4.5, 4.8 is rare to see around.

The GU was a pretty old platform that was at the end of its lifecycle. The GQ and GU utes sold well because they supplied a better standard of trim than the Hiluxes and Landcruiser 70 series of the time. In turbo form they could be optioned into a pretty good package that had a good ride and went well campared to the vehicles of the time.
As an indication of how old the platform is though I was looking at a GU wagon when I bought my D2 new in about 2003. The Canberra dealer told me then that the 4.2 diesel was only available to government gustomers so I went and bought the D2 instead....

I did a lot of miles around the NSW back country in a GU (Maverick) for work many years ago and over the course of 260,000KM the only things that needed fixing outside of regular maintainence were the radiator which got a pinhole and the floor under the accelerator which cracked.

The 4.2 Patrols are no different to any other Japanese 4wd,they are fantastically reliable and bullet proof for people with short memory's. Pat

Rust is the cause,it's also the reason outback models get good prices. Pat

They fitted twin filters so they could do 10k between services, you paid twice as much once you got there but anyway. Pat
