I think the problem is more the popularity of 4 wheel drive vehicles than 4 wheel driving. I am lucky that I drove 4wd professionally many years ago and I was under a few watchful eyes when I first started. With the popularity of 4wd vehicles now, there are a lot of owners lacking the training, skill and common sense to stay safe. It's a 4wd drive, if they can do that on the ad, then I can do it attitude.

Yes, people underestimate how quickly a vehicle can become just a leaky boat.

Sometimes I wonder if the popularity of 4WD videos showing people surfing through creeks with water over the bonnet has caused some people to become a bit blas? and forget those are usually showing expert drivers in prepared vehicles making carefully planned attempts for the cameras.

I feel for the emergency service people......of which I have just become.

I'm not sure where the urge to drive into deep water comes from.. I was always unhappy/on edge if I had to drive in water much deeper than 400mm. I now have a truck with a raised air intake that's above the cab... and I still wouldn't be keen to go much deeper than 400mm... And it would have to be slow moving too!!
