Their electronic systems were down the other day (Telstra?) and were using a manual system to effect purchases. If you offered plastic the cashier wrote out a form recording card no. and all your personal details, name address, contact phone number etc.

Fair enough I thought but I was in a bit of a hurry at the time so just offered cash to short circuit the process. They would not take the cash unless all the same personal details were also handed over. I said cash is anonymous but they would not process the purchase without it.

Left my intended purchase on at the counter, couldn't be bothered arguing with them and bought elsewhere later on.

I set up a "dummy" email address for just this reason. It's mine, not going anywhere else, but all I use it for are these kinds of things. When I filled out forms for said email address, I didn't give out any personal info. Used childhood address, initials for my name, etc.. So anytime I have to give an email for purchases, etc that's the one I use...

The place I work at sells extended warranties, which are a rort anyway; but the single most important piece of information is the email address, as that is used for marketing in-house as well as sold off to third parties. Special orders, customer requests etc we are pushed very hard to get an email addy before useful info such as name and phone number.
This large company sells everything from fruit and veg to fuel and hardware under their various brands.

So has the ATO instructed stores to check details in case of money laundering?
For some businesses cash is a nuisance and don't like taking it.
so much for discount for cash.
I bought a couple of TVs the other day from The Good Guys, they advertise less for cash, but I find you still get discounts of the ticketed price and pay by eftpos or credit card.

I have separate work and private emails and never mix them as I want my work email kept free of other crap.
My BIL has a separate credit card with a nil balance and when he buys online he transfers the amount into the card first so at other times there is no money in that account to steal.
