I am sure they would have strong arguments about that. They are all the same. None of them give fair prices to the primary producers anymore and that's because we go hunting for their bargains , sucked into believing they are offering you a better service.

They have driven the small stores out of business. As I grew up all the supermarkets were privately owned and we were friends with the owners. Do you know any supermarket owners? You believe they are friendly or better because you can get something cheaper there?

They have no concern for you whatsoever apart from conning you to spend your money at their store.
I agree they are all pretty much the same. Who do you know in the supermarket field that cares for anything other than the bottom line? I grew up in the fifties and sixties, and I agree that the service was far more personal back then, but that loss is hardly Aldi's fault. The first 'Safeway" store in Vic opened in my neighbourhood when I was a teenager. (G.J.) Coles was still a variety store. Now it's part of the Westfarmers leviathan. You know, Bunnings, where most of the products are sourced from China? Woolworths owned Masters, ditto. They also own Dan Murphy's, while Westfarmers own 1st Choice. If ever there was something that closed down local business faster than a Bunnings or a Dan Murphy's I'd like to hear about it. They call it progress, and it is inexorable, but, as I said, it's hard to blame Aldi or Costco for that. Coles and Woolworths have had it all their own way for far too long. I still mourn the old petrol station, who sold some car parts. Now they are all mini supermarkets that sell nothing that I want, at a price I won't pay.

The nine month thing is simple; I didn't return to the thread until I saw it again in the 'new posts' section, something I haven't seen before. I think it's new with the site upgrade. Now, I get notifications that you have replied, as I guess you did as well. I wish I could figure out how to turn them off. ( Not yours in particular, all of them )

We have been since Safeway (Vic), or I believe Red S (NSW) first turned up. I well remember the first Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet ( pretty sure they were the first American fast food chain to open in Oz ) taking it's toll on the local hamburger/ fish and chip shops. I also remember how good the burgers used to be. MickeyDees fixed that. Hard to blame Aldi for that as well.

Actually, the "New Posts" thing is sorta cool. I wish the "My Posts" thing was still there though.

Its great if we are putting on a party, but otherwise im lucky to go in the store once every 3 months, but it is good to see allot of their fresh meat, dairy and veg products are locally sourced.

That being said I have bought a few car batterys there rather cheap, and have put a few sets of tires on the car very very cheaply for brand name, so for me it works out as a no brainer.

If I didnt live near or pass the petrol station on a regular basis, I wouldnt pay the membership. I can see that if I had a few small kids then I could possibly do very well on things like nappies and some foods etc over my local foodland supermarket I do 90% of my shop at.
Pretty much how I approach it, bar the petrol. It's too far away for me, but if I'm ever down there ( Braeside) I'll fill up whatever I'm driving ( no petrol at Ringwood). I don't have small kids, but I do have small grandkids, and their parents appreciate the savings I get on the lists they give me. They are all way to busy to kill half a day at Costco.

I've just got my first set of hearing aids, from Costco in Ringwood. From what I can see, I saved over $2,500 in comparison to what my local audiologist would have charged me. I've not used the Costco optometrist as yet but the prices look pretty good also.

Damn. Can you tell me how they go? I have snuck in under the Govt. program, but I would love to 'hear' how yours go. I have had aids for about 5 months now, and won't get the govt thing next time, as I prefer to be a worker.

My membership fee was saved pretty quickly with my first tyre purchase, and I continue to use fuel.
AND electrical goods are covered by a replacement warranty while you keep your membership up ... so you buy a dishwasher and 5 years later it needs repair ... costco will take it back and refund you the price you paid for it. I understand that this is a deal they have with their suppliers, so you will find that their suppliers only supply the 'better' models.
