I generally say a Defender and when I get a blank look follow it up with 'you know, the big square box that doesn't look like it's changed in 50years' then they nod and I either get derision or jealousy.

Well I like to confuse people. My answer to the question is, it depends. Starting with Land Rover, then Jaguar and Alfa Romeo, results in people thinking I'm either an automotive masochist or a guru. Generally I never get as far as the Nissan

    Cheers

If it comes up in conversation, We'll normally say, We own a Landrover Defender, you know the "old looking" one, and people generally then understand,...there aren't many that don't have a picture of a "Landrover" in their mind!

I must admit , when i say what i really want is a LR 101 , and try to explain it's history their eyes glaze over and they start to edge towards the door .
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

If you want blank stares, try telling people you drive a G-Wagen.

When driving the 101 recently a woman approached me and said: "That's a Unimog isn't it?"

To which I kindly replied: "No - it's a Land Rover" - pointing to the Land Rover sign on the door..

To which she replied: "Are you sure it isn't a Unimog?"

At least she was still in the same postcode..

I just say I drive a Discovery ... right or wrongly they usually seem to assume a disco 3 or 4 ... I don't tell them it's a 2 ... unless they want to talk more about it ...

... I try hard not to shatter the illusion !

I just stick with defender. Then point when I get a blank stare. But more often than not most people know what it is. We play punch defender and it took my wife about two years to stop pointing out 40 series LC and jeeps.
