So you think Landrover parts are expensive

It has always amused me to listen to the owners of Landies complaining about the cost of parts. In the big wide world there are very few vehicles that won't sting you when buying replacement parts. Commodore & Falcon aside there are some surprisingly high costs for common replacement parts. Jeep have a poor rep for the cost of their genuine parts, when purchased via their Australian dealer network. VW are probably higher again. However, just to show no one escapes, think of the lowly Kia Sorrento. Buy a 3 year old vehicle with Kia's version of rear height levelling suspension. ( I think they call it adaptive air ) The replacement rear shocks ( they are called Nivomat, as the shock is actually load bearing ) for this particular vehicle retail at over $1600.00 per shock. So your lowly Kia is about $3500.00 to replace 2 rear shocks !! .....and there are no aftermarket alternatives available. Yeow !! that stings !!

We have a Hyundai Tucson. Was a mere $1700 to replace the timing belt. And about a extra $300 or $400 for a major service. Most of that $1700 was labor. Being a east west motor they have to lift one end up to change the belt. Yep it`s all modern vehicles when it comes to the cost of parts.

I do get what you are saying. But remember it is a LR forum so I would expect more complaints (about parts replacement costs) to be directed at Landrovers than Other Marques. After all, who cares that a set of brake pads for a Falcon GT cost $460. All cars have a cost associated with ownership.

What annoys me is the way replacement part prices seem to be jacked up compared to what they cost abroad. And that's across all manufacturers I think.

Not only modern vehicles - I think if you researched the motoring press fifty or a hundred years ago you would find similar complaints, the major difference being that a hundred years ago most parts could be fairly easily made or substituted using normal workshop facilities, since the manufacturers had scarcely more sophisticated facilities.

The only cars where it has not applied is where the car is sufficiently popular (or the part is used by one) that third parties find it worthwhile to produce parts in competition, but this only applies to commonly replaced parts. Helps if the vehicle is long lived as well as popular.

Some years ago my son found that the heater fan speed control "resistor" for his Commodore was going to cost nearly as much as the car was worth. It spent the rest of his ownership with only two speeds - stopped and flat out.

Landrover owners have it much better than other brands, and the 'aftermarket ' availability for most bits is again, far better.

Our Lexus LS430 had self levelling HID headlamps, at $3000 per lamp assembly ONLY from Toyota, the car would be close to a write off after a minor front collision that would have most other vehicles repaired and back on the road. (Was a beautiful motor vehicle though )

The rear tail lamp complete GENUINE assembly from LR for my update L322 costs me less than $500. And they are in stock, so no waiting for months (ex Japan for example) which is often the case with Toyota and even Mazda .

Yes the humble green oval is way ahead in most parts affordability

The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

I have never thought of LR parts as excessively expensive but then i drive an ancient vehicle so parts are comparatively cheap.
