    Kero$ene

I have a gearbox from a metal shaper that needs cleaning out, having sat unused for 30 years. Thought I would fill it with kero and turn it over a bit then let it soak for a few hours. Could not find anywhere that still sells kero from a pump, and the local fuel depo had 20 litre drums of it for over $60!!!

I assumed it would be a cheap option, not 3 times the price of diesel or unleaded. Does anyone still use the stuff?

You may have to go to a fuel depot to get Kero.
Another option to clean out the box could be turps. I find it quite good for cleaning grease etc at work here, and you can pick it up from Bunnings easy as.

The fuel depo was where I got the $3 /L price Marcus. I used good ol' petrol.

Try turps with CT14, works a treat on grease.

Wow, I didn't see that coming, I thought they may have wanted to deliver it for that price. Years ago we used to be able to get it from the stock and station agents,,, just take a can.

The servo i was looking after for 7 weeks still sells kero at the pump. $2.99.9 per litre. Only 3 servos left in Adelaide selling bulk kero at the pump. Can buy it at Bunnings or Stratco for around $75.00 per 20l drum or $7.00 for a litre bottle. Bloody expensive stuff. Just use petrol/ diesel mix.

    Cheers Rod

You mean this sort of shaper?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaper

Mine is cranked by a slotted wheel and really needed just a regrease. No 'gearbox' to speak of - yours I assume is more complicated.

The only gears were those that drive the table and were jammed with old grease.

I took most gear parts off and cleaned them with degreaser spray cans, enzyme washing powder etc. As said above, kero from Bunnings otherwise.

I use way oil on the glides, machine oil being too thin.

Yep that sort of shaper, it's a Macson- an Australian clone of the UK-made Elliott / Alba. I plan to use it for internal keyways and splines. What do you use yours for?

Mine is an Australian made Douglas, probably 60's or 70's tech college tooling.

Got it working but haven't used it yet, focusing on other things.

Same as you, for internal and external straight splines, involutes and keyways. The next step, that is really holding me back, is making the single point cutters - got some high carbon steel, will need to learn to harden it. Then for wear resistance, learning how to case harden the involutes if I make them.

Have seen some interesting adaptions on yourtube, ie hack saw, mold ramming of heated steel etc.
